Naheed Mann’s Journey: Resilience, Mentorship, & the Power of Unwavering Support

Naheed Mann’s path to medicine was forged through perseverance, resilience, and transformative mentorship. Her story – marked by personal sacrifice, caregiver burnout, and financial hardship – demonstrates what’s possible when determination meets unwavering support.

A Dream Forged Through Struggle

Naheed’s medical journey began in 2006, studying internationally while facing extraordinary personal challenges. Without family support and while enduring financial exploitation, she balanced her studies with caring for her father battling Parkinson’s disease. Against all odds, she graduated from St. Christopher’s College of Medicine in 2014.

Yet greater challenges awaited. The crushing weight of caregiving responsibilities, domestic violence, and financial instability made preparing for USMLE Step 1 seem impossible.

A Fateful Encounter

In 2019, while volunteering at an AMSA conference, Naheed connected with the MedSmarter team – a meeting that would alter her trajectory. Months later, she received life-changing news: she’d won MedSmarter’s Step 1 prep course raffle.

This wasn’t mere chance – it was destiny calling. Though joining the online cohort, Naheed continued battling caregiver burnout, financial stress, and declining mental health that made consistent studying difficult. Through it all, Dr. Untara Shaikh (Dr. U), MedSmarter’s co-founder, became her steadfast champion.

“Dr. U consistently reached out, pushing me to stay the course. When everything felt overwhelming, her support reminded me I wasn’t alone.”

Conquering Fear, Finding Purpose

By 2020, Naheed worked in a pain management clinic, but emotional exhaustion and self-doubt kept her from taking her boards. The pandemic forced a transition to IT work, yet Dr. U continued providing free resources and mentorship, keeping Naheed’s medical dream alive.

Her father’s passing brought profound grief – but also clarity. “Losing my dad was devastating, yet it finally gave me space to focus on my future.”

Redemption and Recognition

In 2023, Dr. U invited Naheed to rejoin MedSmarter’s program after interviewing her as part of her PhD dissertation research. This time, something clicked. With structured support, Naheed regained her academic footing. Recognizing her remarkable resilience, Dr. Untara Shaikh and Don Mahmood – co-founders of The MedSmarter Foundation – invited her to join their Advisory Board.

“They saw potential I couldn’t recognize in myself. Their faith became my foundation.”

A Future Reclaimed

Today, Naheed prepares for her board exams with newfound confidence, utilizing MedSmarter’s specialized strategies to overcome test anxiety. She’s targeting the 2026 residency match, transforming years of struggle into triumph.

For Naheed, MedSmarter was more than an educational resource – it was the lifeline that sustained her dream when the world seemed determined to extinguish it.

“The unwavering mentorship from Dr. U and the MedSmarter team is priceless. They didn’t just teach me medicine – they helped me reclaim my destiny.”

The MedSmarter Difference

Naheed’s journey proves that behind every medical professional’s success lie untold battles – and that with proper support, even the most daunting obstacles can be overcome. At MedSmarter and The MedSmarter Foundation, we don’t just train physicians – we transform lives.
